Orlando Pirates midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi has earned the Man of the Match award after delivering an outstanding display during his first Soweto Derby appearance against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday afternoon.
The young midfielder played a significant part in Pirates' 2-1 triumph over their traditional rivals at a packed FNB Stadium. The victory secured valuable league points for the Buccaneers, gave them local bragging rights and propelled them to the top of the Betway Premiership table.
Receiving the individual award on such an important occasion makes the achievement even more special for Mokobodi, considering that this was his first experience of the intense rivalry between the two Soweto clubs.
Despite the enormous expectations surrounding the fixture, he handled the occasion confidently and produced a performance that contributed to Pirates' successful afternoon.
The Buccaneers began the encounter with determination and eventually broke the deadlock in the 24th minute through Yanela Mbuthuma. Kaizer Chiefs responded in the 30th minute after Pule Mmodi took advantage of an error by Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine to restore parity.
Both teams headed into the dressing room with the score at 1-1 after an entertaining first half.
However, Pirates returned from the break with renewed determination and eventually regained the advantage in the 55th minute. Tshepang Moremi found the back of the net with the decisive goal, putting the Buccaneers ahead for the second time in the encounter.
As the contest progressed, Mokobodi continued to contribute in midfield, helping his teammates maintain their advantage against a determined Chiefs side.
His ability to perform under pressure during such a high-profile encounter earned him recognition at the end of the match.
The Man of the Match award represents a significant milestone in Mokobodi's career, particularly as he continues to establish himself within the Pirates squad.
