Marumo Gallants head coach Ronnie Kanalelo has opened up about the emotions he experienced after returning to Mamelodi Sundowns, a club that played a major role in his professional football journey.
Kanalelo revealed that stepping back into an environment where he spent several years as a player brought back memories of an important period in his career. He explained that Sundowns holds a special place in his heart because it was the only professional club he represented during his playing days.
The coach spent almost nine years with the Tshwane-based side after joining in 1997. His time at the club came to an end in early 2006, making Sundowns a significant part of his football development.
Reflecting on his return, Kanalelo admitted that the experience was particularly touching because of the strong connection he still has with the club. He acknowledged that spending such a lengthy period at one institution created memories that have remained with him over the years.
“I’m emotional about it, I only had one professional team in my career, I spent a lot of time here, coming in 1997, I left here in the beginning of 2006,” he said.
His statement highlights the special relationship he maintains with Sundowns despite now working as the head coach of Marumo Gallants. For him, the visit represented more than just another football fixture, as it allowed him to reconnect with a club that shaped much of his professional life.
Kanalelo's journey from being a Sundowns player to becoming a coach also demonstrates how football careers can develop beyond the playing field.
