The Premier Soccer League (PSL) could be forced to reconsider the scheduled date for the 2026 Carling Knockout Cup final after Mamelodi Sundowns advanced to the semi-finals, creating a potential clash with their FIFA Intercontinental Cup commitments.

The Carling Knockout final is currently scheduled for December 12, 2026. However, Sundowns are also expected to travel to Qatar to participate in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup Challenger Cup on the same date, meaning the PSL may have to find an alternative date if the Pretoria-based side reaches the domestic cup final.

Sundowns secured their place in the last four after recording a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Golden Arrows at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on November 3. Bafana Bafana striker Iqraam Rayners scored the decisive goal in the 69th minute, sending Miguel Cardoso's men into the semi-finals.

The FIFA Intercontinental Cup fixture is a major obstacle for the PSL because international competition commitments take priority over domestic matches. Sundowns are scheduled to face the winner of the African-Asian-Pacific Cup contest in Qatar on December 12.

If they progress from that encounter, they could also face European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the Intercontinental Cup final on December 16, further complicating their December schedule.

The situation leaves the PSL with a difficult scheduling decision, particularly as the league is already dealing with fixture congestion following the postponement of seven Betway Premiership matches originally scheduled for November 4 because of South Africa's local government elections.

The league must also consider the remaining Carling Knockout fixtures, continental commitments and the limited dates available before the festive break.

Although Sundowns have not yet secured a place in the final, their progress has placed the PSL on alert. The possibility of another date change could affect supporters, broadcasters, sponsors and the competing clubs.

The PSL will therefore have to carefully examine its calendar as the competition approaches its decisive stages.
