AmaZulu head coach Arthur Zwane has explained why his team will not talk about winning the Betway Premiership title, even after six wins in a row. Usuthu have been among the most impressive sides in South African football this season, and their recent form has put them in the conversation among the league's leading contenders.
Their latest win came last weekend, when they beat provincial rivals Golden Arrows 1-0 in the Durban Derby at Princess Magogo Stadium. Leading scorer Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya got the goal that settled the match and stretched AmaZulu's winning run to six games across all competitions. The result keeps them third on the log, four points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
Even with the growing excitement, Zwane wants his players to stay focused on the next task. "Right now, we don't want to talk about league contenders or what. We are taking one game at a time," he said.
He made it clear that the club's main goal is to qualify for continental football next season. He believes playing in Africa will help the squad grow and add value to the club. "But the mandate from our side is that we have to go to African football next season, because we have been growing gradually and testing ourselves much better at that level so that these boys can grow and the value of the club," he said.
Zwane also looked back at last season, when he says AmaZulu dropped about 15 points through late defensive mistakes and missed chances. He pointed to disappointing results against Golden Arrows, Magesi, Polokwane City, Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhukhune United, games in which the team failed to protect good positions. In his view, those experiences have taught his players more discipline and maturity.
"When you compare us this season and last season, now we can hold on; we make mistakes, but not punishable ones. But trust me, once we score, we make life difficult for you. Why? Because there is chemistry; there is a tactical understanding," he said.
He also suggested that missing out on continental football last season gave the club a chance to rebuild and strengthen the squad.
Zwane may keep avoiding talk of a title, but AmaZulu's form makes them a team to watch. For now, the coach wants his players to take it one match at a time, while the club aims to turn a strong run into a place in Africa next season.
