What Michael Carrick did immediately after Lisandro Martinez red card speaks volumes

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick could not even look at Lisandro Martinez after a moment of madness that saw the defender give away a penalty and be sent off in the second half against Chelsea. The Argentina defender was booked twice within two minutes; the second incident saw VAR intervene and award a spot-kick for a challenge on Wesley Fofana inside the penalty area.

Martinez had only been booked moments earlier after tussling with Morgan Rogers, who had given Chelsea the lead at Stamford Bridge shortly after half-time with a mazy run through the entire United defence.

Referee Peter Bankes then initially decided not to point to the spot when Martinez charged at Fofana, while looking away from the ball, as he caught his fellow defender in the face and felled the Frenchman.

After VAR recommended a review, Bankes went over to the monitor and reversed his decision, before handing Martinez a second yellow card and told him to leave the pitch early.

But as Martinez trudged off, having been held back by his team-mate after confronting Moises Caicedo, Carrick could not look in the direction of his own player.

Carrick had his head down and was busy looking at his notebook, while in conversation with assistant Steve Holland, determining how the team needed to change tactically as they went down to 10 men.
