On Saturday, October 31, South African footballers kept making waves across multiple leagues. Olwethu Makhanya joined Puso Dithejane and Relebohile Mofokeng in claiming victories for their clubs, and Makhanya himself advanced to the European cup final.
The crowning glory was at Hampden Park in Scotland, where Makhanya was an integral part of Rangers' 1-0 semi-final victory over Aberdeen in the Scottish League Cup. The defender for Bafana Bafana started and played the whole match as Rangers advanced to the final. In the 83rd minute, Ryan Naderi scored the game-winning goal, bringing the Glasgow team one step closer to winning the trophy.
In Major League Soccer, the Chicago Fire stunned Colorado Rapids with a 4-2 win. Mbekezeli Mbokazi started the entire match in defence after serving a suspension, and Dithejane came on as a substitute in the 87th minute. In the 88th minute, the South African attacker scored Chicago's fourth goal, demonstrating his contribution in just one minute. Chicago maintained their position in the Eastern Conference standings and qualified for the playoffs with the win.
Mofokeng and Union Saint-Gilloise also had good results in Belgium, as they beat Beveren 2-1. Before being replaced in the 84th minute, the South African attacker was involved in the move that led to his team's first goal.
With a 3-1 triumph over Prisons XI, Mochudi Center Chiefs got back on track in Botswana. An important league result was secured by the team coached by Reneilwe Letsholonyane, a former South African international.
In Azerbaijan, Aden McCarthy felt let down when Sabah lost their first league match of the season, 3-2, to Turan Tovuz. Sabah failed to complete a comeback after introducing the defender at halftime, with their team already down 2-0.
In other news, Yusuf Maart made an injury-time substitution for Austrian club SV Ried in the 72nd minute of their 1-1 away draw with Altach. Altach equalised in the 94th minute after Ried had taken the lead through Isaac Thelin.
The past weekend brought a mix of firsts, significant wins, and disappointing losses for South African players playing abroad, from Scotland to the US and Belgium.
