South African rugby enjoyed a successful weekend in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship, with the Vodacom Bulls, DHL Stormers, and Hollywoodbets Sharks all recording important victories in the fifth round to remain firmly inside the top four.
The 10bet Lions were the only local side to suffer defeat, going down 29-20 to unbeaten Glasgow Warriors in Scotland on Friday evening after letting a promising second-half comeback slip away.
Saturday proved a memorable day for the South African teams. The DHL Stormers produced a strong second-half display to beat Ulster 33-7 in Cape Town, while the Vodacom Bulls ran in eight tries to overpower the Scarlets 54-26 at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.
The Hollywoodbets Sharks completed an impressive day for the country’s teams with a hard-fought 15-3 victory over Munster at Thomond Park in Limerick, securing only their second win in Ireland.
The results leave Glasgow Warriors at the top of the standings with 23 points, followed by the Vodacom Bulls and DHL Stormers on 21 points each. The Bulls occupy second place on points difference, with the Stormers in third. The Hollywoodbets Sharks are fourth on 19 points, level with Edinburgh.
The Lions, who made a promising start to the competition, have slipped to 13th position on nine points.
The competition will now take a break for the Nations Championship before returning early next month. South African rugby supporters can look forward to two local derbies on Saturday, 5 December, when the Lions host the Bulls in Johannesburg and the Stormers travel to Durban to face the Sharks.
The 10bet Lions came agonisingly close to a memorable comeback against Glasgow Warriors on Friday night but ultimately left Scotland empty-handed after a late try and penalty sealed a 29-20 victory for the hosts.
The Johannesburg side faced an uphill battle after trailing 19-3 at halftime, with Glasgow making the most of their opportunities and scoring three first-half tries. Two of those came in the final 10 minutes before the break.
The Lions struggled to turn their opportunities into points and had only a Chris Smith penalty to show for their efforts in the opening half. Their task became even more difficult when Etienne Oosthuizen was sent to the sin bin late in the half.
However, the visitors showed considerable character after the restart. Morne van den Berg crossed in the 50th minute before Siba Mahashe added another try 15 minutes later to bring the Lions back into contention.
With 10 minutes remaining, Morne Brandon crossed the tryline to put the visitors ahead 20-19, raising hopes of a remarkable turnaround.
Glasgow responded when Ollie Smith scored a converted try in the 76th minute, before George Horne added a penalty in injury time to secure the victory and maintain the Warriors' unbeaten record.
Scorers:
Glasgow Warriors 29 (10) – Tries: Fergus Watson, Dan Lancaster, Jack Singleton, Ollie Smith. Conversions: George Horne (3). Penalty goal: Horne.
10bet Lions 20 (3) – Tries: Morne van den Berg, Siba Mahashe, Morne Brandon. Conversion: Boeta Chamberlain. Penalty goal: Chris Smith.
The DHL Stormers produced a much-improved second-half performance to secure a valuable 33-7 bonus-point victory over Ulster at the DL Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday.
Although the home side struggled to find consistency in the opening half, they raised their intensity after the break to maintain their strong home record in the competition.
Ulster struck first through David McCann, who powered over for a try to give the visitors a 7-0 advantage.
The Stormers eventually found their response seven minutes before halftime when JD Schickerling forced his way over near the posts to level the scores.
Paul de Villiers then capitalised on a charged-down kick shortly after the restart, giving the Cape side a 12-7 lead.
Evan Roos produced one of the highlights of the afternoon with a brilliant solo effort, running approximately 60 metres to extend the Stormers' advantage to 19-7.
The home side continued to build momentum, with captain Ruhan Nel showing excellent aerial skills to collect a pinpoint cross-kick from young flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed before scoring the fourth try.
Ahmed then got his name on the scoresheet himself, running a strong line to collect a pass from Haashim Pead and complete the bonus-point victory.
Scorers:
DHL Stormers 33 (12) Tries: JD Schickerling, Paul de Villiers, Evan Roos, Ruhan Nel, Yaqeen Ahmed. Conversions: Ahmed (4).
Ulster 7 (7) Try: David McCann. Conversion: Jack Murphy.
The Vodacom Bulls delivered an impressive attacking performance at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, beating the Scarlets 54-26 after a competitive first half in Pretoria.
The hosts eventually outscored their Welsh opponents by eight tries to four, with a powerful final-quarter performance putting the result beyond doubt.
The Bulls initially looked comfortable after establishing a 19-0 lead, but the Scarlets fought their way back into the contest and reduced the halftime deficit to 19-12.
The visitors continued their fight after the restart, with Joe Roberts scoring their fourth try to briefly bring the scores level at 26-26 just before the hour mark.
However, the Bulls responded strongly. Their scrum provided a solid platform, while improved discipline and fewer handling errors allowed the Pretoria side to take control during the closing stages.
Marcell Coetzee led from the front with two tries, while Dylan Maart also crossed twice in an outstanding attacking display. Jeandre Rudolph was another influential performer, rewarding his hard work with a try.
The Bulls' eight-try performance underlined their attacking strength and ensured they remained second on the overall standings heading into the competition break.
Scorers:
Vodacom Bulls 54 (19) Tries: Marcell Coetzee (2), Dylan Maart (2), Jeandre Rudolph, Willie le Roux, Sebastian de Klerk, Johan Grobbelaar. Conversions: Curwin Bosch (7).
Scarlets 26 (12) Tries: John McKee, Sam Lousi, Archie Hughes, Joe Roberts. Conversions: Carwyn Leggat-Jones (3).
The Hollywoodbets Sharks produced one of their most impressive performances of the season to beat Munster 15-3 at Thomond Park on Saturday evening.
The victory was particularly significant for the Durban-based side, marking only their second win in 13 matches in Ireland. Their previous victory came against Ulster in Belfast in April 2025.
The Sharks also became only the second team to beat Munster at Thomond Park following the Vodacom Bulls, who achieved the feat in April 2025.
The visitors made the most of Munster's mistakes and took control of the match when Gianni Lombard scored the opening try in the 15th minute.
The Sharks defended resolutely throughout the encounter, restricting the hosts to a single penalty by JJ Hanrahan early in the second half.
Lombard extended the visitors' advantage with a penalty goal in the 54th minute, although the Sharks were forced to dig deep after Springbok prop Ox Nche was sent to the sin bin for an illegal clean-out.
Despite being reduced to 14 players, the Durban side continued to apply pressure. A superb run by Nick Hatton created the opportunity for Ivan van Zyl to score the Sharks' second try on the hour mark, with Lombard adding the conversion.
The visitors then showed composure and determination to protect their lead and secure a memorable victory at one of European rugby's most difficult venues.
The result ensured the Sharks remained in fourth position and capped an excellent weekend for South African rugby in the Vodacom URC.
Scorers:
Munster 3 (0) – Penalty goal: JJ Hanrahan.
Hollywoodbets Sharks 15 (5) – Tries: Gianni Lombard, Ivan van Zyl. Conversion: Lombard. Penalty goal: Lombard.
