Wandile Duba etched his name into Kaizer Chiefs history on Tuesday night, scoring a superb second-half hat-trick to fire Amakhosi to a 3–0 Carling Knockout Cup victory over TS Galaxy. The 22-year-old’s treble — his first in professional football — came after a tight first half, and sees him join an illustrious roll call of players who have achieved the feat in the PSL era.
Duba becomes the latest name on a distinguished list. Pollen Ndlanya leads the way with six hat-tricks, including four during his time at Naturena. Current sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr also scored two trebles, against Maritzburg United and Bloemfontein Celtic. Before Duba’s night, the most recent player to do it was Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana, who netted a penalty treble against Stellenbosch FC in 2022.
Other legends on the list include John ‘Shoes’ Moshoeu, Collins Mbesuma, Khama Billiat, Samir Nurkovic and Bernard Parker. Mark Williams and Lehlohonolo Majoro both scored four in a single match, while further back, Marks Maponyane claimed a hat-trick in a knockout tie against Durban City in 1988. Standing above them all is the late Ace Ntsoelengoe, who holds the club record with an extraordinary 14 career hat-tricks.
For Duba, still just starting out, it is a milestone to savour — and a sign of what may be to come.
