According to a report by Metro on November 8, 2026, Manchester United legend Gary Neville has warned Michael Carrick against handing Shea Lacey a starting role when the Red Devils face Aston Villa, despite the youngster’s impressive recent performances.
Lacey has emerged as one of United’s most exciting young players after making an important impact during the club’s dramatic 3-2 Champions League victory over Roma.
Manchester United had fallen 2-0 behind before producing a remarkable second-half comeback to secure their first win in any competition since September. Lacey’s late cameo proved influential as Carrick’s side fought their way back into the contest, increasing calls from supporters for the teenager to be included in the starting line-up against Aston Villa.
However, Neville believes the current situation at Old Trafford makes experience more important than giving opportunities to young players.
Speaking to NBC Sports, the former Manchester United captain insisted that Carrick should resist the pressure to start Lacey and instead select his strongest available team for the important Premier League encounter.
Neville said: “I wouldn’t say it’s time to play kids, it’s a time for experience. I think it’s something you do when you have talented kids for a start but when you’re absolutely desperate.”
He added that the match was an opportunity for Carrick to put his best team on the pitch and demand a performance from his players.
Neville’s warning comes at a difficult moment for Manchester United, who have found themselves in the Premier League relegation zone following the latest round of results.
The former defender admitted that seeing his old club in the bottom three was incredible and described their position as sobering.
Although United’s comeback against Roma generated excitement among supporters, Neville believes the emotion of a European night should not be mistaken for consistent improvement.
He explained that the atmosphere and momentum of such occasions could inspire players, but stressed that the team still needed better performances, clear patterns and a consistent playing style.
Manchester United have struggled badly this season, and Neville warned that entering the international break in the relegation zone would leave the club in a desperate situation.
Carrick must now decide whether to reward Lacey for his contribution against Roma or follow Neville’s advice by relying on more experienced players.
With the pressure increasing at Old Trafford, the Aston Villa encounter represents another important opportunity for United to improve their league position.
