Flamingos’ Umejiaku glows with player of the tournament, final MVP awards

Nigeria’s Oluebube Umejiaku has emerged as one of the standout performers of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, winning the Player of the Tournament award and the Player of the Match honour in the final against Japan.

The young forward capped an impressive campaign with a decisive contribution in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Japan, helping the Flamingos secure their first-ever title in the competition, blueprint reports.

Her recognition underlines the quality and consistency she brought to the tournament, where she played a key role in Nigeria’s historic journey to the summit of women’s youth football.

Umejiaku: Flamingos’ rising star wins Golden Ball, final MVP

Nigeria’s Oluebube Umejiaku has emerged as one of the biggest revelations of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after winning the adidas Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player and the Player of the Match award in the final against Japan.

The young forward capped an outstanding campaign by scoring the decisive goal in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Japan in Rabat on Saturday, November 7, helping the Flamingos secure their maiden title and make history as the first African country to win the competition.

Her double recognition reflects her influence throughout the tournament and has drawn attention to the immense potential of a player whose performances helped deliver one of the most significant achievements in Nigerian women’s football.

From substitute to tournament star

Umejiaku’s journey at the tournament was particularly remarkable because she did not begin Nigeria’s campaign as an automatic starter.

She came off the bench to score against Poland in the opening match, although Nigeria eventually lost 2-1. Rather than allow that disappointment to define the campaign, she grew in confidence and became increasingly influential as the Flamingos progressed.

She scored against DPR Korea and Mexico before delivering the decisive contribution in the final against Japan. Her goals, movement and ability to trouble opposing defenders made her one of the most important players in Nigeria’s attacking set-up.

FIFA reported that Umejiaku contributed to goals across Nigeria’s seven matches, with four goals in the competition. Her overall performance earned her the Golden Ball, the award presented to the outstanding player of the tournament.

Decisive moment against Japan

Her most memorable contribution came in the final against Japan, when Nigeria were seeking to protect their lead and move closer to an unprecedented world title.

After Awawu Bashiru had given the Flamingos the lead in the 39th minute, Umejiaku doubled Nigeria’s advantage in the 47th minute.

She controlled a forward pass from Esther Stephen before calmly lifting the ball over Japan goalkeeper Kou Kadowaki to make it 2-0.

Japan reduced the deficit through Fuki Ito in the 80th minute and pushed for an equaliser, but Nigeria defended resolutely to preserve their advantage and lift the trophy.

Umejiaku’s goal proved to be the winner, while her overall performance earned her the Player of the Match award for the final.

A bright future for Nigerian football

Beyond the individual awards, Umejiaku’s emergence represents another encouraging development for Nigerian women’s football.

Her performances in Morocco demonstrated the value of investing in young players, providing them with opportunities to compete internationally and creating an environment in which emerging talents can develop.

At a time when the Flamingos have delivered a historic world title, her achievement offers a reminder that Nigeria’s football future will depend not only on celebrating victories but also on nurturing the players who make them possible.

The Golden Ball and final Player of the Match awards are significant milestones in the young forward’s career. However, sustaining her progress will require continued development, quality coaching, competitive opportunities and careful management as she advances through the ranks.

For now, Umejiaku can take pride in having played a central role in a triumph that will remain part of Nigerian and African football history. Her performance in Morocco has given supporters another young talent to watch, and her future in the game will be followed with considerable interest.
