According to a report by London Evening Standard on Sunday November 8, 2026, Gary Neville has questioned whether Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres are good enough to lead Arsenal's attack at the highest level.
The former Manchester United midfielder believes the Gunners need to sign two or three additional attacking players, including a world-class striker, if they want to compete for the Champions League trophy.
Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Hull City at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. Martin Odegaard scored the decisive goal, but the overall performance left plenty to be desired. The Gunners struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against the newly promoted side despite controlling much of the encounter.
Speaking on NBC after the match, Neville admitted that he expects Arsenal to win the Premier League this season. However, he believes Mikel Arteta's team must improve their attacking quality to become genuine contenders for European football's biggest prize.
The former England international specifically discussed Havertz and Gyokeres when assessing Arsenal's forward options. He suggested that both players could be valuable members of a strong attacking squad, but neither should necessarily occupy the leading striker position in a team targeting major honours.
Neville explained that Arsenal need an elite centre-forward who can lead the attack. He also suggested that another quality attacker capable of operating from the left wing could improve their options in the final third.
He believes Havertz and Gyokeres would be excellent second and third striker options if Arsenal had a world-class forward ahead of them. However, he warned that their current attacking depth might not be sufficient during crucial Champions League encounters.
Neville's argument reflects the attacking strength of several successful Manchester United teams during his playing career. The club previously enjoyed partnerships involving Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Teddy Sheringham.
Arsenal remain top of the Premier League table following their victory over Hull. However, Neville's assessment has raised fresh questions about whether Arteta needs additional attacking reinforcements to take his team to the next level.
