Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has made his feelings clear about Marcelo Allende's future at the club, revealing that the Brazilians will do everything possible to keep the midfielder for as long as they can.
The 27-year-old Chilean has become an important part of the Sundowns squad since arriving in 2022. During his time at Chloorkop, Allende has helped the club win seven trophies, including three league titles and the CAF Champions League.
His performances have made him one of the team's important players, with his ability to control the midfield, maintain possession and create opportunities earning him praise from the technical team.
However, his future has become a talking point because he is currently in the final year of his contract with the Tshwane giants. Allende has previously indicated that his focus remains on giving his best for Sundowns rather than allowing uncertainty about his future to affect his performances.
Cardoso has now spoken about the midfielder's importance and admitted that the club would like to keep him for many more years.
The coach was speaking after Sundowns secured a 1-0 victory over Golden Arrows in the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final in Pretoria on Tuesday. Allende came off the bench in the second half and was among the substitutes who helped change the game for the Brazilians.
Cardoso described the midfielder as brilliant and highlighted his consistency, professionalism and influence on the team. He explained that Allende is not only an important player because of his technical qualities but also because of the example he sets for other members of the squad.
According to the coach, Allende is usually one of the first players to arrive at training and among the last to leave. He also revealed that the midfielder consistently covers around 12 kilometres during matches, showing his commitment and willingness to work for the team.
Cardoso further explained that Allende has the ability to make difficult situations look simple. The midfielder can receive inaccurate passes, deal with pressure and retain possession when other players might struggle.
The coach believes this ability helps Sundowns control matches and move the ball into areas where teammates have more time and space to make decisions.
He also praised Allende's understanding of the game, explaining that the midfielder knows when to slow things down, control the tempo and move forward to support attacking situations.
Cardoso acknowledged that Bathusi Aubaas has performed well despite the absence of Teboho Mokoena, but stressed that Allende brings something special to the team because he improves the players around him.
Away from football, the Portuguese coach also praised Allende's character and relationship with his family, describing them as wonderful people who have become an important part of the Sundowns environment.
With Allende's contract entering its final year, Sundowns will have an important decision to make regarding his future. Cardoso's comments suggest that retaining the Chilean midfielder is something the club would like to achieve as they look to maintain their competitive strength.
