Pitso Mosimane has responded to allegations that he favors Mamelodi Sundowns players when assembling his Bafana Bafana lineup. Mosimane has an extensive background with the Tshwane club, having coached them from 2012 until 2020.
His time there was filled with significant achievements, including winning the CAF Champions League and securing five league championships, among other accolades. Some of the athletes he coached at Sundowns, like Themba Zwane and Thapelo Morena, are still in the running for national team selection.
This has led to doubts about whether his previous affiliation with the club affects his choices. Never the less, Mosimane has dismissed these accusations, emphasizing that his selections are based on objective data rather than his history with Sundowns.
“It is extremely challenging in the national setup; people believe you simply choose blindly,” Mosimane stated during an interview with SABC Sport. “Or they assume you are selecting friends and think the coach was with Mamelodi Sundowns, that is the reason he is including Ndlovu.'
“They ponder that I am preoccupied with Sundowns; you are entitled to your opinion. I operate on facts and I hold myself accountable for my decisions.” Currently, Sundowns has twelve players in the Bafana squad set to face Kenya in the AFCON Qualifiers.
