It is now crystal clear that the Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise is aiming for more than just making it to the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League, as revealed by midfielder Kamiel Van de Perre.
A goal of Union SG's, according to the 22-year-old midfielder, is to finish in the league's top eight teams, which would guarantee a spot in the round of 16.
Van de Perre was optimistic about his team's chances of continuing their winning streak and their present performance when he spoke to reporters on Thursday, November 5, before their European match against Celta Vigo of Spain.
Union SG have remained undefeated in the competition with seven points from their opening three matches. But if it weren't for his error in the 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad, the midfielder thinks they could have finished undefeated.
Looking back, Van de Perre stated that the team was deserving of their position among the top clubs and emphasized that their goals would not be lowered.
Instead of being satisfied with their current standing, he explained, the players want to win every match that is still to be played.
The Celta Vigo match should be intense, according to the Belgian midfielder, who has compared the Spanish club to his own, praising their possession-based style of play.
According to Van de Perre, fans may be in for a fun matchup between two teams that love to play aggressive, ball-controlling football.
Even though the midfielder hurt his eye in Union SG's last league match against Beveren, he said he would be ready to play in the European match.
He also discussed his desire to play for Belgium at the senior international level, but he stressed that being a consistent performer for his club is his top priority right now.
The next step for Union SG is to maintain their strong European campaign and aim for a spot in the top eight of the competition.
