Former Orlando Pirates star Relebohile Mofokeng played an important role as Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise secured an impressive 2-1 victory over Celta Vigo in the UEFA Europa League.
The South African youngster was included in Union SG's starting lineup and delivered a disciplined performance, helping his team secure an important victory against the Spanish opposition. Although he did not get on the scoresheet, his contribution in the attacking areas was evident throughout his time on the pitch.
Mofokeng showed his quality with the ball, particularly through his passing accuracy and ability to create opportunities for his teammates. The 21-year-old recorded three key passes during the encounter, demonstrating his ability to find teammates in dangerous positions and contribute to his team's attacking movements.
His passing statistics were also impressive. He completed 26 of his 29 attempted passes, giving him an overall passing accuracy of 90 per cent. His performance in the final third was even better, completing 16 of his 17 passes in that area, which represents an outstanding 94 per cent success rate.
The former Pirates attacker also completed all two of his attempted layoffs and successfully delivered two progressive passes from three attempts. He recorded one accurate pass into the final third, showing his willingness to help Union SG move forward and put pressure on their opponents.
In addition to his passing contribution, Mofokeng remained involved in the attacking action. He registered two shots during the match, although neither resulted in a goal. One attempt went off target, while the other was blocked by the opposition's defence.
The South African international accumulated 42 touches before being substituted in the 86th minute. His involvement showed that he was actively participating in his team's build-up play and looking to make things happen whenever he received possession.
Despite his impressive passing numbers, Mofokeng received a match rating of 6.4 out of 10. However, his statistics highlight the technical ability and creativity he brings to the Belgian side.
For South African football supporters, seeing the former Orlando Pirates star competing in European football and contributing to important victories is encouraging.
Union SG will be hoping that Mofokeng continues to develop and become an increasingly influential figure as their European campaign progresses. His ability to create chances, maintain possession and contribute to attacking movements could prove valuable as the club continues its UEFA Europa League journey.
