Ernst Middendorp Questions Thierry Henry's Silence On Soweto Derby Football Quality

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has questioned Thierry Henry over his comments following the recent Soweto Derby, arguing that the former Arsenal and France striker did not say enough about the actual football played during the encounter.

Henry was among the notable football personalities who attended the highly anticipated clash between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium. The match attracted significant attention, with thousands of supporters filling the stadium to witness one of South African football's biggest rivalries.

However, while Henry reportedly gave a positive assessment of the overall event, Middendorp believes there was something important missing from his observations.

Speaking to KickOff, the experienced German coach acknowledged Henry's assessment of the occasion but questioned why he had not shared his thoughts about the quality of football displayed by both teams.

"Great assessment of the event by Thierry Henry, but what did he say about the soccer that was played on the day?" Middendorp asked.

He further explained that he had been interested in hearing Henry's technical assessment of the match, particularly considering his experience at the highest level of international football.

"It would have been good to hear something from Thierry Henry, but I haven't found any quote by him saying even one word about the match itself," Middendorp added.

The comments have introduced another interesting discussion surrounding the Soweto Derby, which once again attracted attention beyond South African football.

The encounter between the two Soweto giants was played in front of a massive crowd at FNB Stadium, with Orlando Pirates eventually securing a 2-1 victory over their bitter rivals.

The Buccaneers found the back of the net through their attacking players, while Kaizer Chiefs managed to score once but could not prevent another disappointing derby result.

Although the atmosphere and excitement surrounding the fixture received considerable attention, Middendorp believes the football itself also deserved a closer examination.

His remarks raise an interesting question about how international football personalities evaluate major African football events. While the atmosphere, supporters and organisation are important parts of the experience, the tactical performance and technical quality of the teams also deserve attention.

For now, Middendorp's comments have added another talking point following a memorable Soweto Derby, with the debate extending beyond the final scoreline.
