Golden Arrows coach Mandla Ncikazi has identified a major problem in his team that could make their upcoming clash against Mamelodi Sundowns even more difficult.
With a challenging encounter against the Tshwane giants approaching, Ncikazi is worried that his players are not creating enough opportunities or scoring the goals needed to compete effectively.
The coach made it clear that his biggest concern is not simply what happens when Golden Arrows defend, but what they produce when they enter the opposition's half.
"But I'm just concerned about us in the attacking third. I'm concerned about us being so less creative in the opponents’ half, scoring so much less goals," Ncikazi admitted.
Those comments reveal the challenge facing Abafana Bes'thende as they prepare for one of their toughest tests.
Sundowns are widely recognised for their ability to dominate possession, put opponents under pressure and create scoring opportunities. Against a team with that kind of attacking quality, Golden Arrows cannot afford to spend the entire match defending without offering a serious threat at the other end.
Ncikazi's concern points to two connected problems: a lack of creativity in the final third and an inability to turn attacking situations into goals.
Creating opportunities is one part of the game, but taking those chances is what ultimately changes the scoreboard. If Arrows struggle in both areas against Sundowns, they could find themselves under sustained pressure.
The coach will therefore want a more dangerous attacking display from his players. Better movement, sharper decisions around the penalty area and improved finishing could all become important if Golden Arrows are to trouble their opponents.
However, the challenge is easier to identify than it is to solve. Sundowns are not an opponent that usually gives teams unlimited time and space to build attacks. Arrows will need to make their opportunities count whenever they get forward.
Ncikazi's admission also puts the spotlight on the attacking players. They will have to show greater confidence and responsibility in front of goal if the team is to turn the coach's concerns into positive action.
For Golden Arrows supporters, the big question is whether the team can find its attacking rhythm in time. A strong defensive performance may keep them in the contest, but goals could be what makes the difference.
