Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has opened up about his passionate touchline behaviour, explaining that his intense reactions during matches are driven by his determination to achieve excellence at one of South Africa's biggest football clubs.
The Moroccan tactician attracted attention during Saturday's Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium, where his emotional reactions on the touchline reflected the intensity and pressure surrounding the highly anticipated encounter. His passion was eventually rewarded as the Buccaneers secured an important 2-1 victory over their bitter rivals.
Speaking after the match, Ouaddou explained that coaching a club of Orlando Pirates' stature comes with enormous responsibilities, particularly after spending 17 years as a professional footballer. He stressed that his ambition is not simply to win matches but to continuously improve his players and maintain the highest possible standards.
"This is a difficult task. You want the best for your squad and your club when you decide to become a coach after playing for 17 years, especially at a major team like the Pirates. I am motivated by excellence," Ouaddou explained.
To illustrate his philosophy, the Pirates coach referred to former Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry, recalling how Henry's father reportedly continued demanding more from him even after scoring four or five goals in youth football matches.
Ouaddou believes that the same mentality should inspire his players to avoid becoming comfortable with their achievements.
"I'd like to push my players for excellence, to be better and better," he added.
The coach also acknowledged that his emotional approach can affect players differently, with some drawing motivation from his passion while others may find it intimidating.
Meanwhile, the derby victory provided Pirates with a significant confidence boost following their MTN8 final defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns.
Ouaddou admitted that his tactical approach did not work as expected during the first half but praised the team's response after making adjustments at halftime.
With the season progressing, the French-born Moroccan coach remains determined to build a winning mentality at Orlando Pirates, insisting that continuous improvement will be essential if the Buccaneers are to challenge for major honours.
