Golden Arrows head coach Mandla Ncikazi has explained why goalkeeper Thakasani Mbanjwa has been left on the bench despite earning recognition for his impressive performances, including a place in Bafana Bafana's preliminary squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Mbanjwa enjoyed a positive start to the season, recording three clean sheets in seven appearances while taking advantage of an injury to former first-choice goalkeeper Edward Maova.
However, the arrival of Dumsani Msibi from Chippa United has changed the situation at the club. Msibi has started Golden Arrows' last three matches, leaving Mbanjwa waiting for another opportunity.
Ncikazi made it clear that he is not interested in changing goalkeepers when his preferred option is performing well. The coach also revealed that he prefers maintaining consistency in the goalkeeping department rather than regularly rotating players.
“Don’t fix if it’s not broken. Mbanjwa is a top goalkeeper but if the other one is doing well, unfortunately he has to wait.”
The Arrows tactician explained that Msibi impressed him when he arrived at the club and demonstrated qualities that suit the team's preferred style of play.
According to Ncikazi, the goalkeeper's ability to distribute the ball, build attacks from the back and play both short and long passes makes him suitable for the team's tactical approach.
The coach also praised the attitude of his goalkeepers, insisting that competition for the starting position remains healthy within the squad.
Mbanjwa's inclusion in Pitso Mosimane's preliminary Bafana Bafana squad represents recognition of his performances, although he will need to continue working hard to regain his place at club level.
Golden Arrows currently have several goalkeeping options, but Ncikazi's comments suggest that Msibi will retain the starting position as long as his performances remain satisfactory.
