Letsholonyane Sends Strong Message to Kaizer Chiefs Players as Expectations Rise at Naturena

Kaizer Chiefs legend Reneilwe Letsholonyane has challenged the current Amakhosi players to take greater responsibility for the club's performances, insisting that the squad has enough quality to compete for major honours this season.

The former Chiefs midfielder believes there have been encouraging signs under head coach Fernando Da Cruz, particularly in the team's organisation and overall approach to matches. However, he has made it clear that tactical improvements alone will not guarantee success if the players fail to deliver on the pitch.

Speaking about the club's performances, Letsholonyane recalled how impressed he was with Chiefs when the 2026/27 campaign began. According to the former midfielder, Amakhosi initially demonstrated a level of organisation that had been missing from the team for a considerable period.

"When the league started, I remember saying that this was the most organised Chiefs that I've seen in a very long time. They looked organised in how they played," Letsholonyane said.

His comments suggest that the former midfielder has recognised positive developments in the team's tactical structure since Da Cruz took charge at Naturena.

However, Letsholonyane believes the responsibility for improving the club's results cannot rest entirely on the coaching staff. He has urged the players to demonstrate greater commitment, determination and hunger whenever they represent the famous gold and black jersey.

"But in the end, the people that are playing are the players. The players must also work hard, put in more effort, grind out the results and show who they really are and that they want it," he added.

The message comes at an important stage of the season for Chiefs, who are determined to restore their position among the leading teams in South African football.

Amakhosi have experienced several challenging campaigns in recent years, with supporters growing increasingly impatient for consistent performances and meaningful silverware.

The arrival of Da Cruz has created fresh expectations, with the French tactician tasked with building a competitive team capable of challenging Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and other Betway Premiership contenders.

Chiefs have shown flashes of improvement, but maintaining consistency remains one of the biggest challenges facing the technical team.

Letsholonyane's remarks also highlight an important reality at Naturena: while the coach can provide tactical direction and prepare the squad, the players must take responsibility when matchday arrives.

With the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates attracting significant attention, the coming fixtures offer the Chiefs players an opportunity to demonstrate whether they have the mentality and quality required to compete for honours this season.

For the Amakhosi faithful, the expectation is clear: they want to see commitment, improved performances and results that reflect the history of their beloved club.
