Mamelodi Sundowns reclaimed top spot in the Betway Premiership with a dominant 2–0 victory over Durban City at Loftus Versfeld, inspired by a first-half and second-half header from defender Thabang Matuludi — his first brace for the club.

Orlando Pirates had leapfrogged Masandawana to claim summit bragging rights earlier in the weekend, but Miguel Cardoso’s side responded with purpose from the opening whistle. Cassius Mailula was denied by Frderick Asare in the ninth minute, before Ethan Brooks blazed over Durban City’s best chance on the half-hour mark.

The deadlock was broken in the 32nd minute. Matuludi rose unmarked from a corner to power a header past the goalkeeper, giving Sundowns a deserved lead. Durban City offered little in response, rarely testing Ricardo Goss in the visitors’ goal. Then, just past the hour, Matuludi struck again — another firm header, doubling the advantage and sealing the points.

Bokang Mokwena wasted a golden chance to pull one back for Durban City, shooting wildly from close range, while Siyanda Ndlovu and Matuludi himself both went close to adding a third in the closing stages — Asare producing excellent saves to keep the score respectable.

The result restores Sundowns’ position at the league’s summit, a statement performance delivered in style.
