Stellenbosch dump durban city out and keep trophy hopes alive

Kwayiba Strikes Twice as Stellenbosch FC Sink Durban City to Reach Carling Knockout Quarter-Finals

Stellenbosch FC booked their place in the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-finals after securing a convincing 2-0 victory over Durban City, with Sinoxolo Kwayiba delivering a decisive second-half brace to send the Winelands outfit into the next round.

The victory keeps Stellenbosch's hopes of lifting the domestic cup alive as they continue their pursuit of another major trophy. Having previously won the competition in 2023, the club will be determined to build on that success and make another strong run in this season's tournament.

Both teams entered the knockout encounter knowing that victory was essential to their ambitions of progressing in the competition. However, Stellenbosch eventually demonstrated their quality and composure, producing the decisive moments when it mattered most.

After a competitive opening period, the match came to life in the second half when Kwayiba found the back of the net to give Stellenbosch the breakthrough they had been searching for. His goal changed the complexion of the contest, forcing Durban City to abandon their cautious approach and push forward in search of an equaliser.

Durban City attempted to respond, knowing that their Carling Knockout campaign was at risk of ending. However, Stellenbosch remained organised and continued to look dangerous as they sought to strengthen their advantage.

Kwayiba then struck again to complete his brace, putting Stellenbosch firmly in control with a 2-0 lead. His second goal proved crucial, leaving Durban City with a difficult task and allowing the Winelands side to manage the closing stages with greater confidence.

The result represents an important achievement for Stellenbosch as they advance to the quarter-finals with renewed belief. Kwayiba's performance also highlighted his importance to the team, particularly in a high-pressure knockout fixture where individual contributions can determine the outcome.

Stellenbosch will now turn their attention to the quarter-finals as they seek to continue their pursuit of Carling Knockout glory. Meanwhile, Durban City must regroup and focus on their remaining fixtures after their cup journey came to an end.
