AmaZulu continued their impressive run in the Betway Premiership after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over KwaZulu-Natal rivals Golden Arrows, while Chippa United delivered a statement performance with a convincing 2-0 away win against Stellenbosch FC on Saturday.
The two results provided plenty of talking points in the South African top flight, with AmaZulu strengthening their position among the league's leading teams and Chippa collecting valuable points in their fight to climb the standings.
Ngwenya makes the difference in KZN derby
AmaZulu claimed local bragging rights at the Princess Magogo Stadium, extending their winning streak in the league to five consecutive matches.
The decisive moment arrived in the 65th minute when Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya found the back of the net to hand Usuthu a deserved advantage.
The forward showed his attacking quality inside the penalty area after Nkosikhona Radebe provided the opportunity, allowing Ngwenya to finish with a left-footed effort and give the home supporters something to celebrate.
AmaZulu had looked dangerous from the opening stages, creating opportunities through Athini Maqokola, Philani Kumalo and Mondli Mbanjwa. However, Golden Arrows remained competitive and managed to keep their opponents at bay during the first half.
Arrows also threatened after the interval, with Sabelo Sithole testing goalkeeper Olwethu Mzimela as the visitors searched for a breakthrough.
Nevertheless, AmaZulu maintained their defensive discipline after taking the lead, frustrating their neighbours and protecting their advantage until the final whistle.
The victory keeps Usuthu in third position on the Betway Premiership table and further strengthens their growing confidence as the campaign progresses. Ngwenya's contribution also underlines his importance to an AmaZulu side enjoying a productive spell.
Chippa stun Stellenbosch on their own ground
Meanwhile, Chippa United produced one of Saturday's notable results by defeating Stellenbosch FC 2-0 at the Danie Craven Stadium.
The visitors started with purpose and were rewarded in the 27th minute when Harold Majadibodu opened the scoring. The defender reacted inside the penalty area after a set-piece created problems for the Stellenbosch defence.
Stellenbosch attempted to respond, with Siviwe Nkwali, Chumani Butsaka and Luthando Vena among those looking to restore parity. However, Chippa remained organised and carried their advantage into half-time.
The home side continued pushing after the restart, but Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali produced an important intervention to deny Sinoxolo Kwayiba from close range.
The decisive second goal arrived in the 83rd minute. Imraan Jones finished clinically with a left-footed effort after being set up by Justice Figuareido, effectively ending Stellenbosch's hopes of rescuing a result.
