Pirates Beat Chiefs 2-1 to End Their Unbeaten Run in Soweto Derby

Orlando Pirates claimed the first Soweto Derby of the Betway Premiership season with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The result ended Chiefs’ unbeaten start to the league campaign and gave the Buccaneers local bragging rights in one of South African football’s biggest rivalries.

The packed stadium was filled with yellow-clad Chiefs supporters as the two Soweto giants faced off. Pirates struck first in the 24th minute when Yanela Mbuthuma finished a move started by Thapelo Mokobodi. His shot took a deflection and beat Brandon Petersen in the Chiefs goal. Chiefs hit back six minutes later. Pule Mmodi capitalised on a mistake by Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine to stab home the equaliser and send the teams into the break level at 1-1.

Pirates regained the lead early in the second half. Mokobodi again provided the key pass, setting up Tshepang Moremi for a simple finish in the 55th minute. Moremi’s goal proved decisive as Pirates held on for the win. Chiefs pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages but finished with ten men after Inacio Miguel was shown a second yellow card in stoppage time.

The three points took Pirates to the top of the Betway Premiership standings with 25 points from nine matches. The win also kept their strong home record intact and continued their good run in recent Soweto Derbies. For Chiefs, the defeat was their first of the league season and left them looking for answers after a difficult afternoon against their arch-rivals.

Both sides had gone into the match in good form after midweek Carling Knockout wins, but it was Pirates who controlled the key moments. The opening exchanges were cautious, yet the game opened up once the first goal went in. Pirates showed the clinical edge required on the biggest stage, while Chiefs will feel they could have taken something from the contest.

In South African football, few matches carry the weight of the Soweto Derby. Pirates supporters will celebrate the bragging rights heading into the rest of the season, while Chiefs must regroup quickly. The return fixture later in the campaign will give Amakhosi another chance to settle the score. For now, the Buccaneers leave FNB Stadium as the team sitting at the summit of the table after a memorable afternoon in Johannesburg.
