From Hero To Zero: Why Polokwane City Made Masuluke Take Crucial Spot-Kick Before Disastrous Wining

Polokwane City Coach Explains Why Goalkeeper Masuluke Was Trusted With Crucial Penalty

After Rise and Shine's devastating Carling Knockout Cup loss, Polokwane City assistant coach Sheppard Sentane justified including custodian Oscarine Masuluke among the penalty takers.

The Limpopo side lost their last-16 match against Siwelele FC 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a scoreless 120-minute match at Saturday night's Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Polokwane City's Masuluke was among those who missed the penalty kick, but Siwelele's custodian Jody February made some huge save to prevent his club from elimination and into the quarterfinals.

It was not a last-minute risk, according to Sentane; rather, Masuluke's performance in training was the deciding factor in the penalty assignment.

We have been preparing, and he's been kicking nice penalties, so we cannot alter it now', the assistant coach said after the game, explaining that the custodian had done well in that role throughout their preparations. Sentane elaborated, saying, "Unfortunately, he missed." The player in question had been entrusted to handle team affairs.

The significance of being well-prepared while facing the prospect of a penalty shootout in knockout football is emphasised by the coach's remarks.

Even though it's unusual to choose the custodian to take a penalty kick, Sentane made it plain that the coaching staff had faith in Masuluke's abilities from their time together in training.

Sentane stressed that the whole squad was responsible for the outcome, rather than placing blame on the seasoned custodian for the elimination.

While he did concede that missing a penalty is a sad reality of sport, he was certain that no player takes the pitch with the intention of disappointing his teammates.

If Masuluke had converted the penalty, the assistant coach claims he would have been a hero.

As a result, Sentane urged team cohesion as Polokwane City focused on their forthcoming obligations.

After a closely fought match against Siwelele, Rise and Shine had hoped to advance in the tournament; this loss is just the latest setback.

Even though Polokwane City reduced Siwelele to 10 men in extra time, they maintained their composure and went on to win the shootout. The team from Bloemfontein advanced to the round of eight when Thato Letshedi converted the game-winning penalty.

The first order of business for Polokwane City is to get over their loss and get back on track before their next match.

The players, according to Sentane, need to keep their chins up, take stock of what happened, and make the most of the possibilities that are still on the table this season.

Whether a team wins or loses, the assistant coach made it plain that Masuluke shouldn't take the heat alone; after all, football is a team sport.
