Steve Sekano Reveals Why He Walked Away From Steering Committee

Moroka Swallows legend Steve Sekano has opened up about his decision to leave the club’s Supporters and Shareholders Steering Committee, revealing concerns about the committee’s financial position and its ability to fulfil its ambitions of bringing the historic Soweto club back to prominence.

Sekano’s revelation comes at a sensitive time for the Dube Birds, following renewed efforts to revive the name and restore the club’s place in South African football.

The former Swallows star reportedly explained that the steering committee had only R10 000 available, raising questions about the resources at its disposal and whether it had the financial capacity to turn its plans into reality.

His comments have attracted attention because the committee was established through the supporters’ ‘Bring Back The Birds’ initiative, which sought to unite former players, supporters and shareholders around the goal of restoring Moroka Swallows.

Why Sekano Decided To Leave

The headline from the interview, originally reported by KickOff on 29 October 2026, captures the central issue behind Sekano’s explanation: the committee’s limited financial resources.

For a project built around reviving a club with a proud history, funding is an important consideration. Organising supporters, pursuing investment, engaging potential sponsors and developing a sustainable football structure all require resources.

The committee’s reported R10 000 position therefore raises questions about how much progress it could realistically make without stronger financial backing.

Sekano’s departure also highlights the difficulties that can emerge when supporters attempt to rebuild a football institution through collective efforts without the financial strength and organisational support needed to move the project forward.

However, his comments should be understood within the context of the interview. They do not, on their own, establish that every member of the committee shared his views or that the entire revival initiative had officially collapsed.

Moroka Swallows’ Return Creates New Questions

The development comes after businessman Walter Mokoena announced plans connected to the return of Moroka Swallows.

The announcement surprised sections of the supporters’ steering committee, which had spent nearly two years working towards reviving the Dube Birds.

Committee chairperson Thulani Mayekiso previously expressed disappointment that supporters were not consulted before the announcement became public. He said members had expected communication because of the work they had invested in the revival project.

The situation became more complicated after Mokoena reportedly questioned the committee’s role in the new initiative.

According to earlier comments relayed by Sekano, Mokoena believed his own project was separate from the committee’s efforts and said he had approached former Swallows legends directly.

A Difficult Road Ahead For The Dube Birds

Moroka Swallows remain one of South Africa’s historic football names, having built a strong following over decades.

The club’s sale of its Premier Soccer League status to Marumo Gallants in 2024 marked a painful chapter for supporters, particularly because the team was relocated to Bloemfontein.

For many fans, bringing back the Birds is about more than establishing another football team. It is about protecting a legacy and restoring a connection with the club’s traditional supporters.
