Back
Mamelodi Sundowns defender Mothobi Mvala has taken an important step forward in his campaign after finally securing a starting opportunity under head coach Miguel Cardoso, but the experienced centre-back now faces a bigger challenge as he looks to establish himself in the team.
The 32-year-old was handed a rare start on Tuesday, 27 October, when Sundowns faced Marumo Gallants in the Carling Knockout Round of 16 at Loftus Versfeld.
It was a significant moment for Mvala, who had been working his way back into regular involvement following a lengthy injury lay-off. Although he had made appearances earlier in the season, including substitute outings, Tuesday’s match offered him a valuable opportunity to demonstrate his readiness from the beginning.
Sundowns won 1-0 through Siyanda Ndlovu’s first-half goal, securing their place in the Carling Knockout quarter-finals. More importantly for Mvala, he completed the match and helped the Brazilians keep a clean sheet.
A Significant Opportunity Under Cardoso
Cardoso made several changes to his starting line-up, with Mvala partnering young defender Malibongwe Khoza in central defence.
The Portuguese coach was looking for a response after Sundowns’ disappointing CAF Champions League elimination against Angolan side Wiliete SC.
For Mvala, the match represented an opportunity to remind the technical team of the experience, leadership and defensive qualities he can offer.
According to FARPost, it was his first start since November 2024, highlighting the significance of being trusted with a starting role again.
The defender also wore the captain’s armband, demonstrating the responsibility he continues to carry within the squad.
His contribution was particularly important because Sundowns needed defensive stability while attempting to rebuild confidence after their continental disappointment.
Bigger Demands Await The Experienced Defender
However, one good performance cannot automatically guarantee Mvala a regular place in Cardoso’s plans.
Sundowns have several defenders competing for opportunities, including younger players who are also trying to establish themselves. Malibongwe Khoza, in particular, has attracted praise from Cardoso for his maturity and development.
Mvala must therefore continue proving that he can maintain his fitness, perform consistently and handle the physical demands of competing across different competitions.
His long-term injury absence makes careful management especially important. The defender previously spent an extended period recovering, and Cardoso has made it clear that he does not want to rush players back before they are ready.
The challenge now is to build on Tuesday’s performance without putting unnecessary pressure on his recovery.
Sundowns Need Mvala At His Best
Mvala’s experience could become valuable as Sundowns navigate a demanding domestic campaign.
The Brazilians have ambitions in the Betway Premiership and Carling Knockout, while also preparing for their CAF Super Cup assignment against USM Alger.
