He Doesn't Understand Our Football — Kaizer Chiefs Coach Exposes Nigerian Striker Ighodaro

Da Cruz Reveals Why Nigerian Striker Ighodaro Is Struggling To Impress At Kaizer Chiefs

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — 2 NOVEMBER 2026

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has opened up about the challenges facing Nigerian striker Etiosa Ighodaro at Naturena, revealing that the 25-year-old is still struggling to fully understand the club's tactical approach.

Ighodaro joined Amakhosi with hopes of strengthening their attacking department, but his involvement under Da Cruz has been limited. The situation has attracted attention among supporters who are eager to see the Nigerian forward establish himself as an important player for the Soweto giants.

Da Cruz has now provided an explanation, making it clear that the striker's challenge is not simply about scoring goals or physical ability, but also understanding the team's overall playing philosophy.

"Ighodaro is 25 years old, so it's difficult for him to assimilate the way we play," Da Cruz stated through a translator.

The French tactician's comments suggest that Ighodaro needs additional time to understand the tactical responsibilities expected of him before becoming a regular feature in the starting line-up.

The coach's explanation also indicates that the technical team is not giving up on the Nigerian international, but instead wants to help him adapt to the system being implemented at Naturena.

DA CRUZ ALSO PROVIDES KHANYISA MAYO UPDATE

Ighodaro is not the only Chiefs striker whose situation has raised questions. South African forward Khanyisa Mayo is also working towards becoming available for selection after struggling with fitness issues.

Da Cruz confirmed that Mayo is getting closer to returning, but explained that he was not physically prepared for the intensity of the recent Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates.

"Mayo is not far, he's a quality player, but for this game he was not physically ready to play this type of game," the coach explained.

The Chiefs mentor further highlighted the importance of physical preparation, particularly when facing opponents like Orlando Pirates, who can introduce quality substitutes and maintain high intensity during the closing stages.

His comments come after Amakhosi suffered a 2-1 defeat against their Soweto rivals at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 31 October 2026.

With important fixtures approaching, Chiefs will need greater attacking depth as they look to recover from their derby disappointment.

Ighodaro now faces an important period at Naturena. His ability to understand Da Cruz's tactical demands could determine how frequently he features in the coming matches.

For Amakhosi supporters, the big question remains whether the Nigerian striker can overcome his adaptation challenges and finally deliver the performances expected of him.
