Matthews Leads the Way as Premiership Assist Race Heats Up

The importance of creativity and teamwork continues to shine in the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season, with several players already making their mark through their ability to create goalscoring opportunities for their teammates.

While goals often attract the biggest headlines, assists remain an important measure of a player's contribution to a team's attacking success. From unlocking stubborn defences to delivering decisive passes in the final third, creative players can make a significant difference in the outcome of matches.

Leading the current assist standings is Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Tashreeq Matthews, who has registered four assists in nine appearances. His impressive numbers underline his contribution to Sundowns' attacking play, with his creativity and movement offering the team another dimension in the final third.

Matthews' position at the top of the standings highlights the value of players who can combine individual ability with an understanding of their teammates' movements. Creating chances consistently requires vision, timing and the ability to make the right decision under pressure.

Siwelele FC's Tebogo Potsane is among the players following closely behind. The midfielder has recorded three assists in just six appearances, demonstrating his ability to influence attacking situations despite having played fewer matches than some of his competitors.

Potsane's figures make him one of the early names to watch in the race for the season's leading assist provider. If he maintains his current level of creativity, he could remain a strong contender as the campaign progresses.

AmaZulu's Nkosikhona Radebe has also made a positive contribution, registering three assists in eight appearances. His presence among the leading creators reflects the importance of supplying teammates with opportunities to find the back of the net.

Orlando Pirates attacker Oswin Appollis completes the current group of leading assist makers, having recorded three assists in eight appearances. His inclusion further demonstrates the attacking quality available in the Premiership, where individual creativity can prove decisive in tightly contested matches.

With the season still developing, the standings remain open to change. More appearances, tactical adjustments and improvements in attacking combinations could influence the race in the coming weeks.

For supporters, the competition offers another interesting storyline to follow alongside the battle for points and league positions. For the clubs involved, having players capable of creating goals consistently could prove crucial in achieving their ambitions.

Matthews currently leads the way, but Potsane, Radebe and Appollis will be looking to close the gap as the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign continues.
