According to a report by Barca Universal on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Barcelona are exploring the possibility of strengthening their defence during the January transfer window, with Tottenham Hotspur right-back Pedro Porro reportedly emerging as their leading candidate. The Spanish defender has attracted the attention of the Catalan giants as they consider adding more quality and depth to their defensive department.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is particularly interested in improving his defensive options following several injury problems involving key players. Although signing a centre-back remains the club's primary objective, the possibility of recruiting another full-back has not been completely abandoned.
According to Mundo Deportivo journalist Roger Torello, Barcelona could pursue reinforcements in both defensive positions if suitable opportunities become available. The club had initially planned to strengthen these areas last summer, alongside the arrival of Joao Cancelo, but difficulties involving expected player departures affected their recruitment plans.
The situation has become increasingly challenging following injuries to several defenders. Eric Garcia is reportedly facing three to four weeks on the sidelines after suffering a thigh injury. Andreas Christensen has also experienced physical problems, while Jules Kounde is recovering from an ankle sprain.
These setbacks have significantly reduced Flick's available defensive options. With Garcia and Kounde unavailable, Barcelona currently have Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin as their available centre-back alternatives, increasing the urgency to strengthen the position.
Meanwhile, Porro has become an attractive option for the right-back role. The 27-year-old Spanish international has established himself as an important player at Tottenham, and his experience in English football makes him a valuable potential addition to Barcelona's squad.
However, convincing Tottenham to release the defender during the January transfer window could be extremely difficult. The Premier League club strengthened their position in June 2026 by extending his contract until 2031, with an additional one-year extension option included in the agreement.
This contractual situation gives Tottenham considerable control over the player's future and makes negotiations particularly complicated.
Consequently, Barcelona could consider postponing their pursuit until next summer, when they may have a better opportunity to negotiate a possible transfer. The Catalan club would also need to improve its financial position, potentially through player sales, before making a serious attempt to secure his signature.
For now, no official offer or agreement has been reported, while Tottenham have given no indication that they are prepared to sanction Porro's departure.
