According to a report by BBC Sport on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Manchester City secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over London City Lionesses in a thrilling Women’s Super League encounter at the Copperjax Community Stadium.
The defending champions were made to work for the three points after London City produced an impressive first-half performance and created numerous opportunities. However, Manchester City’s quality in front of goal ultimately proved decisive.
London City dominated the opening period and came close to taking the lead on several occasions. Jana Fernández, Danielle van de Donk, Izzy Goodwin, Alexia Putellas and Kadidiatou Diani all had opportunities, but the hosts were unable to convert their chances.
Goalkeeper Mary Earps, making her first WSL start, was also instrumental in keeping London City from scoring. She produced an excellent double save to deny Rebecca Knaak, first tipping her header onto the post before recovering to claw the rebound away from the line.
London City finished the first half with 12 shots, including nine from inside the box, but only two were on target as their lack of finishing prevented them from taking advantage of their dominance.
Manchester City eventually broke the deadlock eight minutes into the second half. Lauren Hemp played a precise pass through the London City defence for Khadija Shaw, who rounded Earps before firing into the roof of the net from close range.
The goal was Shaw’s ninth in the WSL this season and highlighted the Jamaican striker’s clinical finishing. London City responded strongly and were rewarded in the 72nd minute. Mapi León delivered the corner that allowed Fernández to score with a header into the far corner, bringing the hosts level.
Their hopes of completing the comeback, however, lasted only two minutes. Manchester City restored their advantage in the 74th minute when Hemp diverted Mary Fowler’s cross into the net. The goal completed a quick response from the visitors and proved decisive.
The result extended Manchester City’s unbeaten run and kept them at the top of the WSL table, although their defensive vulnerabilities were again exposed after London City’s dominant display..
