Jamie Redknapp names Arsenal’s biggest title rivals after Man City defeat

Jamie Redknapp believes Arsenal are well-placed to win the Premier League title this season, insisting that Brighton could emerge as their closest challengers following Manchester City's latest defeat.

According to a report by Sky Sports on Saturday, 7 November 2026, the former Liverpool midfielder believes Mikel Arteta's side are significantly stronger than their domestic rivals and could pull away from the rest of the competition.

Arsenal strengthened their position at the top of the Premier League table with a narrow 1-0 victory over Hull City at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Martin Odegaard scored the decisive goal as the Gunners secured three important points, moving six points clear at the summit.

Their advantage increased later in the evening when Manchester City suffered a third consecutive league defeat, losing 3-1 to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Pep Guardiola's side are now six points behind Arsenal, while Brighton have an opportunity to move above City into second place if they defeat Brentford on Sunday.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp questioned whether any team currently possesses the quality to challenge Arsenal for the title.

"They [Man City] obviously miss Semenyo, he’s a big player for them in the wide areas but they’ve still got people in wide positions who can cause problems," he said.

"That one today is a sore one, it gives you the feeling right now in terms of who can challenge Arsenal? I just don’t see one."

Redknapp subsequently identified Brighton as the team he would consider Arsenal's nearest challengers, despite admitting that he did not expect them to occupy that position earlier in the campaign.

"If you look at the league table, I think right now, probably the one you’d point to, and I never thought I’d say this at the start of the year, but it’s Brighton."

The former England international also highlighted Arsenal's defensive strength, suggesting that Arteta's side are unlikely to experience the same defensive problems that Manchester City displayed against Nottingham Forest.

"Arsenal have got Saliba coming back, the players they’ve got defensively, you’d never see Arsenal look as open as we saw Manchester City look [against Forest]."

Redknapp added that Arsenal's ability to grind out results, alongside their overall quality across the pitch, makes them difficult to catch.

"I don’t really see anything else other than Arsenal running away with this title at the moment."

Although the Premier League campaign remains at an early stage, Manchester City's latest setback has further strengthened Arsenal's position as the leading contenders, with Brighton emerging as a potential challenger.
