According to a report by London Evening Standard on Sunday November 1, 2026, Manchester United have reportedly reached an agreement to keep Michael Carrick in charge for their next two matches despite growing pressure on the head coach following another disappointing defeat.
According to reports, the club's hierarchy have decided against dismissing him immediately and will reassess his position during the upcoming international break.
United's latest setback came on Saturday when they suffered a 2-0 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Morgan Rogers opened the scoring in the second half before Lisandro Martinez received a red card. Cole Palmer subsequently converted the resulting penalty to secure all three points for Chelsea.
The defeat extended United's winless run to nine matches across all competitions. Their poor form has also left them dangerously close to the Premier League relegation zone, increasing concerns about Carrick's ability to turn the situation around.
United's senior officials had previously held emergency discussions about his future following a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth. Carrick was expected to lose his job after that result, but the club eventually decided to give him another opportunity.
Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox were both present at Stamford Bridge. They had also participated in discussions at Carrington, where potential replacements were reportedly considered.
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, former Newcastle boss Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann were among the candidates linked with the position. Antonio Conte was also mentioned as another possible option.
However, United have now decided to retain Carrick for their upcoming fixtures against Roma in the Champions League and Aston Villa in the Premier League.
Speaking after Saturday's defeat, Carrick remained confident about continuing in his position. When asked whether he expected to oversee the next match, he responded positively.
He also stressed the importance of winning games, insisting that United could quickly improve their league position with a positive run of results.
