According to a report by London Evening Standard on Friday, November 6, 2026, Emi Martinez has returned to Chelsea training after recovering from a fractured jaw, giving head coach Xabi Alonso a selection option before Sunday’s Premier League visit to Sunderland.
The Argentine goalkeeper was back at Cobham wearing protective facial equipment. He suffered the injury during Chelsea’s victory over Everton last month, and his progress has been quicker than expected. His return to training does not guarantee an immediate place in the starting team, however.
Mike Penders has filled in during Martinez’s absence and strengthened his case to remain in goal after keeping a clean sheet against Manchester United. Alonso must now decide whether Martinez is ready for action or whether Penders should continue at the Stadium of Light.
Chelsea also have concerns over Moises Caicedo. The midfielder felt discomfort after the 2-0 win over Manchester United and was not seen during the part of Wednesday’s training session open to journalists. His condition leaves his availability uncertain.
There are positive developments in the squad. Aaron Anselmino has resumed training after an injury and has received an international call-up from Argentina. Romeo Lavia could keep his midfield place following his performance against United, while Estevao is competing to retain his starting role.
Several players remain unavailable. Joao Pedro, Maxence Lacroix and Jorrel Hato are still injured. Captain Reece James is recovering from knee surgery and is not expected to return until January. Jamie Gittens is also out after sustaining an ankle injury while on duty with England Under-21s last month.
Chelsea’s predicted formation is 3-4-2-1, with Penders; Acheampong, Fofana and Colwill; Neto, Caicedo, Lavia and Chavarria; Estevao and Palmer supporting Rogers.
The predicted line-up lists Caicedo despite uncertainty surrounding his fitness, while Martinez is considered a doubt. The injured list comprises Joao Pedro, James, Lacroix, Gittens and Hato.
With Sunday’s match approaching, Alonso’s final decisions will depend on assessments of Martinez and Caicedo. Chelsea may otherwise make few changes to the side that defeated Manchester United, with Penders’ recent form providing an alternative in goal as the weekend fixture approaches.
