According to a report by Barca Universal on Saturday October 31, 2026, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has ruled out a January departure for Brazilian forward Estevao despite Barcelona’s reported interest.
The 19-year-old has struggled for regular playing time this season, but Alonso insists he remains part of his plans.
Barcelona have monitored Estevao since his days at Palmeiras and considered signing him before he joined Chelsea last year. The Catalan club are reportedly keeping an eye on his situation because of his limited involvement under Alonso.
However, one reason Barcelona did not pursue the winger was the presence of Lamine Yamal. Both players operate in similar positions and possess comparable qualities, making it difficult for Estevao to fit into the club’s plans.
Sporting director Deco explained earlier this year that Barcelona already had a player with similar characteristics in Yamal. That influenced their decision not to move for the Brazilian.
Estevao enjoyed a productive debut season at Chelsea, but his opportunities have been restricted this term. Before the match against Manchester United, he had played fewer than 50 minutes in the Premier League. He was also overlooked for Chelsea’s Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool earlier in the week.
His lack of minutes reportedly prompted Barcelona to monitor developments more closely. However, Alonso has played down the possibility of an imminent transfer.
The Chelsea manager said Estevao would play because the season is long and opportunities would come for everyone. He acknowledged that players naturally want to be on the pitch and accepted responsibility when his selection decisions leave someone unhappy.
Alonso was firm when asked about a January move, insisting there had been no discussions about the Brazilian leaving.
His comments suggest Chelsea intend to give Estevao time to establish himself. Whether that leads to a bigger role remains to be seen, while Barcelona continue monitoring his progress.
