According to a report by BBC Sport on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Arsenal Women were unable to secure a victory against Aston Villa Women as both teams played out a 1-1 draw in their latest Women's Super League fixture. Alessia Russo rescued the Gunners from defeat by scoring an important equalising goal in the closing stages.
Arsenal entered the match determined to collect maximum points, but they faced a stubborn Aston Villa side that made life difficult for their visitors. Despite enjoying several attacking opportunities, the Gunners struggled to find a way past the opposition goalkeeper.
The visitors started the match positively and created their first major opportunity in the 11th minute when Caitlin Foord tested Akane Okuma. However, the Aston Villa goalkeeper reacted well to keep the effort out. Georgia Stanway and Taylor Hinds also threatened as Arsenal looked to establish an early advantage.
Aston Villa eventually took the lead in the 25th minute. Chasity Grant finished from inside the penalty area with a right-footed strike into the bottom corner after receiving a pass from Lynn Wilms. The goal put Arsenal under pressure as they searched for a response.
The Gunners continued to push forward before the half-time whistle, but their finishing let them down. Okuma made another important stop to prevent Stanway from scoring, while Kyra Cooney-Cross could not convert her headed chance from close range.
Arsenal manager made two substitutions at the beginning of the second half, with Emily Fox and Lisa Baum coming on for Taylor Hinds and Géraldine Reuteler. The changes were aimed at improving the team's attacking threat and increasing their chances of finding an equaliser.
Aston Villa continued to rely on Okuma, who produced further impressive saves against Baum and Kim Little. However, her resistance was finally broken in the 85th minute when Arsenal found their breakthrough.
Stina Blackstenius delivered a dangerous cross into the box, and Russo met the ball with a well-directed header that found the bottom corner to restore parity.
The visitors were not satisfied with a draw and continued searching for a winning goal during the additional five minutes. Russo, Foord and Ona Batlle all had opportunities, but none could produce the decisive finish.
The match ended 1-1, with Arsenal dropping two valuable points despite their efforts to complete a comeback. Aston Villa, meanwhile, earned a hard-fought point after defending resolutely against the Gunners.
