Nigeria's Flamingos secured their spot in the semi-finals of the FIFA U17 Women's World Cup with a 1-0 win over Venezuela on Sunday night. Azeezatt Oduntan struck from the penalty spot in the 89th minute to settle a tightly contested quarter-final.

The match remained goalless for most of the evening as Venezuela goalkeeper Valeria Rebanales made crucial saves to frustrate Nigeria's attacking moves. Midfielder Favour Nkwocha received a yellow card as the Flamingos maintained pressure throughout the first half.

Head coach Hakeem Busari introduced Precious Oscar for Oluwakemi Adegbuyi midway through the contest in search of a breakthrough. The deadlock persisted until the 88th minute when the referee pointed to the spot.

The official initially awarded the penalty before consulting the VAR monitor to review the decision. After checking the footage, he upheld his call, allowing Oduntan to step up and convert with composure.

Top scorer Oluebube Umejiaku earned the penalty that proved decisive for Nigeria. Her work in the box created the opportunity Oduntan needed to seal the victory.

The Flamingos will now face Brazil in the semi-finals after the South Americans beat China 2-1 in their quarter-final clash. Nigeria will look to book their place in the final when the two sides meet.
