Nigeria's Flamingos Is World Champion

According to a report by FIFA.com on Saturday, November 7, 2026, Nigeria's Flamingos have been crowned world champions after defeating Japan 2-1 in the final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco on Saturday.

The victory marks a historic achievement for Nigerian women's football, as the Flamingos secure their first-ever title in the competition and become the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.

The Nigerian girls delivered a memorable performance against their Japanese counterparts to emerge victorious in the tournament's final at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, Morocco.

The Flamingos took the lead in the 39th minute through Awawu Bashiru, who found the back of the net to give Nigeria a deserved advantage before the break.

Nigeria doubled their lead just two minutes into the second half, with Oluebube Umejaiku scoring in the 47th minute to put the West Africans firmly in control of the contest.

Japan refused to give up and reduced the deficit in the 80th minute through Fuki Ito to set up a tense closing period.

However, the Flamingos held on to their advantage to secure a memorable 2-1 victory and lift the trophy.

The triumph also represents a remarkable turnaround for the team, whose campaign began with a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Poland in their opening group-stage fixture.

However, head coach Akeem Busari and his players responded impressively, recording victories over Puerto Rico and defending champions North Korea to progress from the group stage.

The Flamingos subsequently defeated Mexico 2-1 in the round of 16 before edging Venezuela 1-0 in the quarter-finals, courtesy of Azeezat Oduntan's late penalty.

They continued their impressive run with a convincing 3-1 victory over Brazil in the semi-finals, with Queen Joseph opening the scoring before Awawu Bashiru netted twice to secure Nigeria's historic qualification for the final.

Japan, meanwhile, entered the final as one of the tournament's strongest teams after overcoming North Korea in a dramatic semi-final encounter decided by a penalty shootout.

Their meeting with Nigeria presented an opportunity to claim a second title, having previously won the competition in 2014.

However, the Flamingos ultimately prevailed 2-1 to bring the trophy home and establish Nigeria as champions of the world at the U-17 women's level.

The achievement is another significant milestone for Nigerian football and a major moment for women's football across the African continent.
