FIFA U-17 WWC: Umejiaku Awarded Player Of The Match In Flamingos’ Victory Over Japan

Flamingos star Oluebube Umejiaku was awarded Player of the Match following an extraordinary performance that propelled Nigeria to a historic 2–1 victory over Japan in Saturday’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final in Morocco.

Umejiaku, who has been one of the standout players of the tournament, delivered another display defined by composure, tactical discipline, and sharp attacking intent to help her country secure the coveted trophy.

Nigeria broke the deadlock in the 39th minute when Awawu Bashiru unleashed a long-range strike that proved too hot to handle for the Japanese goalkeeper, slipping through her hands and into the back of the net.

The Flamingos doubled their advantage just two minutes after the restart. Umejiaku capped off her stellar tournament run by capitalizing on a scoring opportunity in the 47th minute, driving a firm finish home to put Nigeria firmly in command.

Japan pushed hard to mount a comeback and pulled a goal back in the 80th minute through Fuki Ito, but Nigeria’s resolute defense stood firm through the closing stages to seal the victory.

Umejiaku’s commanding performances throughout the campaign in Morocco have etched her name into Nigerian footballing history as she looks toward the next chapter of her career.
