The Greatest Goalscoring Seasons Ever Recorded in Football History

According to report by Nigerian Tribune on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Football has witnessed extraordinary goal-scoring campaigns, with some strikers producing numbers that remain difficult to imagine in the modern game.

Among the most remarkable is Lionel Messi’s 2011/12 season, when the Barcelona forward scored 73 goals across club competitions, surpassing Gerd Müller’s long-standing record.

However, Messi does not hold the highest total on the list.

Josef Bican scored 76 goals for Slavia Prague during the 1943/44 season, a remarkable achievement recorded during the Second World War.

The ranking considers goals scored for a player’s club in a single season across league, domestic cup and continental competitions. Friendly, testimonial and international goals are excluded.

Each player is represented only once, based on his most prolific campaign. Where records from earlier decades are disputed or incomplete, the most widely accepted figures are used.

Fernando Peyroteo recorded 56 goals in 35 appearances for Sporting CP during 1945/46, scoring in the Primeira Liga, Portuguese Cup and Lisbon Championship.

His remarkable career average stood at 1.6 goals per game, while he won five league titles with Sporting.

Luis Suarez produced 59 goals in 53 appearances for Barcelona in 2015/16. He scored 40 league goals to win the European Golden Shoe and added 19 assists.

With Lionel Messi sidelined for part of the campaign, Suarez carried much of Barcelona’s attacking responsibility, including four goals against Deportivo La Coruna and a hat-trick against Real Madrid. Barcelona won La Liga and the Copa del Rey.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a personal-best 61 goals in 54 matches for Real Madrid in 2014/15.

His haul included 48 La Liga goals, 10 Champions League goals, two in the Copa del Rey and one in the Spanish Super Cup. He remarkably scored 26 league goals in his opening 15 matches.

Jimmy McGrory netted 62 goals in 46 games for Celtic in 1927/28, including eight in one match against Dunfermline Athletic.

Dixie Dean scored 63 goals in 41 appearances for Everton that same season, with 60 coming in the First Division, an English record that still stands.

Ferenc Deak completed the listed group with 66 goals in just 34 matches for Szentlorinc in 1945/46. His 1.94 goals-per-game ratio remains the highest among the players highlighted.
