According to a report by BBC Sport on Sunday, November 8, 2026, Arsenal defeated Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield in the Women's Super League, with England international Alessia Russo scoring both goals for Renee Slegers' side.
Russo gave the visitors an early advantage in the ninth minute, finishing from close range after receiving a pass from Emily Fox. However, Arsenal's lead lasted only six minutes before Liverpool found an equaliser through Beata Olsson.
The Liverpool forward controlled a long ball from Natalia Ramos, escaped the challenge of Arsenal defender Leah Williamson and finished confidently to bring the hosts level at 1-1. The equaliser gave Liverpool renewed confidence as they attempted to take control of the encounter, but Arsenal remained dangerous going forward.
The Reds thought they had completed a turnaround when Jenna Clark reacted quickly to score following a corner. However, the goal was disallowed for offside after Vivien Endemann was judged to have touched the ball during the attacking move.
Replays subsequently suggested that Arsenal defender Steph Catley had actually made contact with the ball before it reached Clark. Arsenal eventually restored their advantage just before half-time through Russo, who completed her brace in the 45th minute.
The England forward connected with a well-delivered cross from Lisa Baum and directed a downward header into the bottom corner to give the Gunners a 2-1 lead heading into the break. Liverpool attempted to find another equaliser after the restart but struggled to break through Arsenal's defensive organisation.
Russo came close to completing her hat-trick in the 72nd minute, but Clark made an important intervention to prevent the striker from scoring from close range. The visitors managed to protect their advantage until the final whistle, securing an important three points away from home.
Russo's performance earned her the Player of the Match award with an average rating of 9.09, while her two goals took her tally to seven in her last four appearances across all competitions. The victory moved Arsenal up to seventh place in the Women's Super League table, while Liverpool remained 11th following another disappointing result.
The Gunners have now recorded 22 victories against Liverpool in the Women's Super League, the highest number of wins any club has achieved against a single opponent in the competition.
The result also ended Arsenal's difficult spell in the league, with Slegers' team securing their third league victory of the season ahead of important upcoming fixtures against Barcelona, London City Lionesses and Lyon. Liverpool, meanwhile, extended their winless run in the league to five matches and will travel to Brighton next weekend.
