UCL: Why we came from behind to beat Roma 3-2 - Man Utd boss, Carrick

According to a report by Daily Post on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has explained how his side fought back from a two-goal deficit to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory over Roma in the UEFA Champions League at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils endured a difficult start against the Italian side, conceding twice within the opening 12 minutes and appearing to be heading towards another disappointing result.

However, United produced an impressive second-half display to turn the game around, with Bruno Fernandes scoring from a retaken penalty before Matheus Cunha struck twice to complete the comeback.

The victory was particularly significant for Carrick and his players, as United entered the encounter having failed to win any of their previous nine matches in all competitions.

Their poor run of results had increased the pressure on the manager, but the comeback against Roma provided a much-needed boost to the team.

Speaking to UEFA after the match, Carrick admitted that it was a difficult encounter, especially given the quality of their opponents.

He described Roma as a strong side and acknowledged that his players initially struggled to cope with the pressure they faced.

"It was a challenging game," Carrick said.

The Manchester United manager revealed that his team had expected a difficult contest, knowing Roma had suffered just one defeat throughout the season.

He explained that United made a reasonable start before conceding an unexpected opening goal, which affected the confidence of his players.

"I think we started OK in the game; we knew it was going to be tough - they've only had one defeat all season. They're a very, very good team," he explained.

Carrick also admitted that United's recent struggles contributed to the nervousness shown by some of his players during the first half.

According to the manager, several mistakes allowed Roma to take control of the encounter and establish a two-goal advantage.

Despite going into the half-time break trailing 2-0, Carrick revealed that he urged his players to remain positive because he believed they could still change the outcome.

The former United midfielder reminded his team that anything was possible at Old Trafford and encouraged them to keep fighting rather than allow the scoreline to affect their confidence.

He also pointed out that United had started to improve towards the end of the first half, which gave him confidence that a comeback was within reach.

"Then I thought we grew into the game a bit at the end of the first half, and I spoke at half-time about being positive. Anything can happen here; I've seen it many times over the years," Carrick said.

His half-time message appeared to have the desired effect as Manchester United returned for the second half with greater determination and attacking intent.

Bruno Fernandes eventually reduced Roma's lead from the penalty spot after being given another opportunity following an initial miss.

The Portuguese midfielder converted his second attempt to make it 2-1 and give United renewed hope of securing a positive result.
