According to a report by Madrid Universal on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Real Madrid experienced difficulties finding consistency during the early stages of the season, with their midfield failing to deliver the expected performances.
Mourinho initially depended on a midfield partnership between Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni, but the combination failed to produce the results he wanted.
The manager eventually introduced a different tactical approach by moving Valverde into the right-back position, creating more opportunities for Arda Guler and Bernardo Silva to establish themselves in midfield.
Although Guler had already been producing impressive performances, Bernardo initially struggled to make a significant impact. However, both players have improved considerably under Mourinho and have gradually become important members of the starting lineup.
Their contrasting qualities have also given Real Madrid greater variety in midfield. Bernardo offers experience, composure and excellent positional awareness, helping the team retain possession, control the tempo and exploit available spaces during matches.
Guler, meanwhile, brings creativity, unpredictability and the ability to trouble opposing defenders through his movement and attacking qualities. Their individual strengths have shown that they can work effectively alongside each other when selected together.
However, Mourinho’s decision to use Valverde at right-back has not been positive for every member of the squad. The tactical adjustment has reduced opportunities for Real Madrid’s recognised right-backs, who now face stronger competition for places in the starting eleven.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, who joined the Spanish giants from Liverpool last summer in a highly anticipated transfer, is among those affected by the change.
Real Madrid also strengthened their defensive options by signing Denzel Dumfries, with the expectation that both players would provide quality and competition at right-back.
However, neither defender has managed to establish himself as Mourinho’s preferred choice for important matches. Valverde’s impressive displays in the unfamiliar position have made it increasingly difficult for them to secure regular starting opportunities.
Mourinho’s tactical changes have therefore helped improve Real Madrid’s midfield while creating a difficult selection situation in defence.
