Mike Penders showed against Manchester United that Chelsea are in safe hands

According to a report by Football London on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Mike Penders has strengthened his chances of remaining Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper after delivering another impressive display in the 2-0 win over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

The 21-year-old Belgian has shown that Chelsea are in "safe hands" following Emiliano Martinez’s injury, with his recent performances earning him further confidence from manager Xabi Alonso.

Penders was handed a starting role after Martinez suffered a fractured jaw during Chelsea’s victory over Everton.

The young goalkeeper initially endured a difficult outing against Tottenham, where he punched the ball into his own net from a corner during a 2-0 defeat.

Despite the mistake, Alonso continued to support him, explaining that such errors were part of his development and confirming that he would remain in the team for the following matches.

Penders responded with a strong performance against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, although Chelsea eventually lost on penalties at Anfield.

He maintained that form in Saturday’s meeting with Manchester United, making several important saves to help his side secure a clean sheet.

One of his best moments came during stoppage time when he produced an excellent fingertip save to keep out Bryan Mbeumo’s effort, turning the ball onto the crossbar.

Alonso praised the goalkeeper’s response, pointing to his performances against Liverpool and Manchester United and his ability to recover from the difficult moment against Tottenham.

"Not just today, I think that in Liverpool he was really solid, he had a very good performance, very stable for a keeper and today he has shown good level. Another clean sheet, the second one in three games and we need to keep going. Mike has overcome the difficult moment that we got here last Saturday and this is part of the development of a goalkeeper, of any player."

The Chelsea manager has also suggested that Martinez could return before the international break, potentially wearing a protective face mask as he continues recovering from his jaw injury.

Until the Argentine goalkeeper is fully fit, Penders is expected to retain his place in the starting lineup.

However, the Belgian’s recent performances could give Alonso a difficult selection decision to make once Martinez returns.

Penders has demonstrated composure and resilience under pressure, strengthening his position and giving Chelsea another dependable option in goal.
