Xabi Alonso is continuing his search for Chelsea’s strongest starting lineup as he becomes familiar with the squad and manages injuries to important players. Football London reported on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, that the manager still has decisions to make before settling on his preferred team. Several options are unavailable, including João Pedro, Maxence Lacroix and Emiliano Martínez. Their returns will give Alonso more choices but could create difficult selection decisions.
Goalkeeper: Emiliano Martínez
Mike Penders impressed against Manchester United, but Martínez remains the preferred option because of his experience and quality. The Argentine had begun showing signs of returning to form before breaking his jaw against Everton.
Right-back: Reece James
Chelsea have appeared more balanced in a 4-2-3-1 formation than when using three central defenders. James would strengthen the right side, provided he stays fit after previous hamstring problems.
Centre-back: Josh Acheampong
Although recently used at right-back, Acheampong’s physical qualities and defensive ability make him a candidate for the centre of defence. He is comfortable carrying the ball forward and could become an important option there.
Centre-back: Levi Colwill
Colwill has improved after an uneven start to the campaign. His left-footed distribution and ability to compete against opposing forwards make him a suitable partner for Acheampong. Selecting the pair would leave summer arrival Lacroix, reportedly signed for £52 million, outside the strongest team.
Left-back: Jorrel Hato
Hato gets the nod ahead of Pep Chavarría because of his technical ability, composure in possession and contribution going forward. His performances have strengthened his case for a regular role.
Defensive midfield: Romeo Lavia
Lavia’s display against Manchester United demonstrated what he can bring to Chelsea’s midfield. He would protect the defence, recover possession and help control the tempo, allowing Caicedo greater freedom.
Central midfield: Moisés Caicedo
Caicedo remains a leading selection because of his energy, defensive work and influence across midfield. His ability to cover ground and contribute in different phases makes him important to this setup.
Right wing: Estevão Willian
Estevão has earned consideration after an impressive first Premier League start under Alonso this season. His pace, direct running and willingness to challenge defenders troubled Manchester United and strengthened his claim to retain a starting place.
Attacking midfield: Cole Palmer
Despite recent inconsistency, Palmer remains Chelsea’s strongest option in the number ten role. His creativity, vision and ability to decide matches make him difficult to leave out.
Left wing: Morgan Rogers
Rogers has impressed through his attacking movement and work in the left half-space. He is not a conventional winger, but his versatility and ability to influence dangerous areas make him valuable.
Centre-forward: João Pedro
Pedro completes the proposed lineup after establishing himself as one of Chelsea’s key attacking players. His movement, technical quality and finishing place him among the Premier League’s leading forwards, alongside Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak. His return would give Alonso another established option up front.
The eleven balances security with creativity, pace and attacking movement while offering a framework Alonso can adjust as players regain fitness.
