According to a report by FootballTransfers on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Chelsea are beginning to witness Romeo Lavia's best qualities after the midfielder overcame a difficult period of injuries, according to manager Xabi Alonso.
Lavia joined Chelsea from Southampton for €62 million (£51m) in July 2023 but has struggled to maintain his fitness since moving to Stamford Bridge.
However, the midfielder has made significant progress this season, completing 90 minutes in Chelsea's matches against Liverpool and Manchester United.
Alonso praised Lavia's increasing confidence and his ability to cope with a demanding playing schedule.
“Rom is feeling better, stronger and more confident,” he said. “He went from playing the whole game at Anfield to doing it again less than 72 hours later with the same energy. Sometimes the head is more important than the legs, and his head is in a good place.”
Lavia delivered an impressive performance in Chelsea's 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United, recording 23 defensive contributions, the highest number by any player on the pitch. He also provided an assist for Morgan Rogers, marking his second career assist in a Chelsea shirt.
The Chelsea manager was also impressed by the midfielder's overall contribution, praising his composure, movement and ability to connect the team's defensive and attacking play.
“From a midfielder’s point of view, it was a very complete display,” the Chelsea manager said. “He made good decisions, switched play well and competed throughout. I’ve seen him in top form over the past few weeks, and he deserves recognition.”
Lavia will now aim to maintain his impressive form when Chelsea travel to face Sunderland on Sunday. The Blues have won three of their last four league matches and currently occupy fourth position in the table.
Sunderland, on the other hand, are at the bottom of the standings after recording just one victory in their opening nine league fixtures.
