According to a report by ESPN UK on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Manchester United suffered another frustrating afternoon during their 2-0 Premier League defeat to Chelsea after Matheus Cunha's famous surfing celebration was interrupted by a VAR decision.
Cunha initially appeared to have put Manchester United ahead at Stamford Bridge after converting a close-range opportunity. The Brazilian forward celebrated alongside teammates Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo, but their excitement was short-lived as the goal was subsequently disallowed for offside following a Video Assistant Referee review.
The incident highlighted United's disappointing afternoon under Michael Carrick, despite creating several promising opportunities during the first half without managing to take advantage of them.
According to reports from the match, Cunha scored from close range after Harry Maguire won the initial aerial challenge from a corner. However, VAR officials determined that the Brazilian was in an offside position when the ball returned to him, leading to the cancellation of the goal.
The decision was a major disappointment for United, who had started the encounter positively and appeared capable of causing problems for Chelsea's defence. Amad also came close to finding the net, while Mbeumo played an important role in several attacking moves.
Despite their encouraging performance before the break, United failed to score and eventually paid the price for their missed opportunities.
Chelsea returned for the second half with greater attacking determination and took the lead in the 50th minute through Morgan Rogers.
The England international produced an impressive individual effort, driving past United's defensive players before lifting the ball over goalkeeper Senne Lammens to put the hosts ahead.
Rogers' goal shifted the momentum in Chelsea's favour, allowing the home side to grow in confidence while Manchester United struggled to find an equaliser.
United's situation became even worse when Lisandro Martinez was sent off during the second half. Following a VAR review of his challenge on Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana, the Argentine received a second yellow card, while the referee awarded the Blues a penalty.
Cole Palmer stepped forward and confidently converted the spot-kick, extending Chelsea's advantage to 2-0 and leaving Carrick's team with an uphill battle after being reduced to 10 players.
The penalty also represented a significant personal achievement for Palmer, as it was his 50th Premier League goal for Chelsea. His effort effectively secured the result, although the hosts continued creating opportunities.
Despite trailing by two goals, Manchester United continued searching for a way back into the contest.
During stoppage time, Mbeumo almost scored a consolation goal with a powerful long-range effort, but the ball struck the crossbar after Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders managed to get a touch.
The missed opportunity provided another frustrating moment for the visitors, who had created several chances but lacked the finishing quality required to challenge Chelsea.
Chelsea also saw a goal from Brazilian youngster Estevao Willian ruled out for offside during the second half. Nevertheless, the Blues had already done enough to secure all three points.
The victory represented an important return to winning ways for Chelsea following disappointing results in the Premier League and Carabao Cup, while Manchester United were left disappointed by another damaging performance.
The defeat has increased the pressure on Carrick, whose players had entered the encounter hoping to recover from their previous weekend's 3-0 loss to Bournemouth.
United's continued inability to convert promising attacking opportunities into goals has become a major concern, with their wastefulness in front of goal repeatedly affecting their results.
According to Reuters, the defeat also extended Manchester United's winless run across all competitions to nine matches, further raising questions about Carrick's future as manager.
