According to a report by BBC Sport on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Tottenham Hotspur secured an important 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace in the Premier League after taking advantage of their numerical superiority following Jean-Philippe Mateta’s first-half dismissal.
Crystal Palace started the encounter brightly and looked eager to threaten the home side. In the ninth minute, Daichi Kamada came close to opening the scoring, but his effort was kept out by an important save from Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.
However, Palace suffered a major setback when Mateta was sent off following a VAR review. The forward was initially shown a yellow card for a sliding challenge, but referee Michael Oliver changed his decision to a straight red card after reviewing the incident.
The dismissal reduced Crystal Palace to 10 men and gave Tottenham an opportunity to take control of the match. Spurs increased their attacking pressure and took the lead in the 25th minute through Archie Gray.
Mohammed Kudus delivered a corner into the Palace penalty area, where Gray connected with a powerful header that beat Dean Henderson and gave Tottenham the advantage.
Despite playing with an extra man and going into the break ahead, Tottenham could not find another goal before half-time. Crystal Palace remained organised defensively, while Henderson made several important saves to keep the scoreline down.
Tottenham continued to dominate possession after the restart and pushed forward in search of a second goal. Mathys Tel, Dominic Solanke and other attacking players worked to put further pressure on the visitors’ defence.
Henderson remained one of Palace’s busiest players, producing several impressive saves to keep his team in the contest. The visitors also survived another dangerous moment when a clearance off the goal line prevented Tel from scoring from close range.
Spurs maintained their attacking approach and continued creating chances. Robertson also tested Henderson, but the Palace goalkeeper produced another save to deny him.
Tottenham eventually doubled their lead in the 73rd minute when van Hecke headed the ball into the bottom-right corner of the net, leaving Crystal Palace with a difficult task.
With a two-goal advantage, the hosts grew more comfortable and continued to control proceedings. Palace struggled to create meaningful attacking opportunities as their numerical disadvantage made it difficult to mount a consistent response.
Kudus later appeared to have a chance to add a third goal, but his effort was ruled out for offside. Henderson also produced another excellent save to deny Kulusevski, while Pedro Porro came close but failed to hit the target.
Crystal Palace continued trying to prevent further damage but could not find a way back into the contest before the final whistle.
The victory handed Tottenham three valuable points in their Premier League campaign and strengthened their position in the standings.
Mateta’s first-half dismissal proved decisive in changing the direction of the match, allowing Tottenham to make their numerical advantage count and secure a comfortable 2-0 win.
