Matheus Cunha delivered a decisive display to lead Manchester United to an impressive 3-2 comeback victory over AS Roma after the hosts had fallen two goals behind. According to a report by BBC Sport on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, the Brazilian forward scored twice in the closing stages, transforming a difficult evening at Old Trafford into a memorable result for the home side.
United endured a disappointing opening period as Roma established control and took advantage of defensive weaknesses. The visitors moved ahead in the 11th minute through Matias Soulé, who finished confidently after receiving an excellent delivery from Rodrigo Mora.
Roma strengthened their position six minutes later when Donyell Malen converted a penalty to make it 2-0. The early goals left United facing a significant challenge, with the team needing a much-improved performance after the interval to avoid another disappointing result.
Cunha, however, remained determined to help his teammates recover. The forward continued searching for opportunities after the restart, showing the attacking urgency United needed to put pressure on the Italian visitors.
The home side eventually found a route back into the contest in the 58th minute. Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty after being given another opportunity to take the kick, reducing Roma's advantage and giving United renewed belief that a comeback was possible.
Despite Fernandes' important contribution, Cunha became the central figure in the closing stages. His first goal arrived in the 83rd minute when he connected with an accurate cross from the United captain inside the penalty area. The Brazilian demonstrated composure and good positioning before guiding his effort into the bottom-right corner, bringing the score level at 2-2.
United needed only three more minutes to complete their turnaround, with Cunha once again providing the decisive finish. Shea Lacey delivered a well-timed pass into the penalty area, allowing the forward to find space and direct the ball inside the right post. The goal made it 3-2 and completed a remarkable recovery from two goals down.
Cunha's quickfire double changed the outcome of a match that had appeared to be slipping away from United. His finishing, determination and influence in the attacking areas proved crucial as the hosts overturned Roma's early advantage.
The Brazilian's evening nevertheless ended on a disciplinary note after he received a second yellow card during stoppage time and was sent off. His dismissal meant United had to see out the closing moments without him, but the damage to Roma's hopes had already been done.
Despite the late sending-off, Cunha's two goals made him the standout performer of the encounter. His contribution earned him the Man of the Match award and ensured that United secured a dramatic 3-2 victory at Old Trafford.
