According to a report by The Chelsea Chronicle on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Chelsea will travel to the Stadium of Light on Sunday looking to maintain their winning form in their final fixture before the November international break.
Xabi Alonso’s side returned to winning ways after suffering defeats against Tottenham and Liverpool, securing an important 2-0 victory over Manchester United last weekend.
The result moved the Blues above Liverpool into fourth place in the Premier League table, while another victory could see them overtake Brighton and move into the top three.
Mike Penders is expected to retain his position in goal despite Emiliano Martinez being available after recovering from a jaw injury earlier than expected.
Although Martinez may still have to wear a protective face mask, Penders has impressed in recent matches, giving Alonso little reason to make a change between the posts.
Chelsea’s defensive options have been affected by Maxence Lacroix’s hamstring injury, making a back four the most likely formation against Sunderland. Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana are expected to occupy the centre-back positions.
Josh Acheampong is also likely to continue at right-back after becoming an increasingly important player in Alonso’s plans.
However, the left-back position remains uncertain. Marco Palestra struggled defensively during the victory over Manchester United, potentially giving Pep Chavarria an opportunity to start.
The summer signing is more familiar with playing as a traditional full-back and could offer the defensive balance Chelsea need for the difficult away fixture.
In midfield, Romeo Lavia is expected to partner Moises Caicedo. Lavia was among Chelsea’s best performers against Manchester United, although another appearance would mark his third consecutive start. The gap between fixtures should provide enough time for him to recover ahead of Sunday's encounter.
Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers are expected to feature in the attacking positions, while Estevao Willian has strengthened his chances of keeping his place on the right wing following an impressive performance against United.
The Brazilian youngster produced an energetic display that earned him praise from the Stamford Bridge supporters.
Alonso’s biggest selection decision could come in the centre-forward position. Pedro Neto may once again be deployed as a false nine despite his quiet performance last weekend, while Danny Welbeck provides a more traditional attacking option.
However, given Alonso’s confidence in Neto, the winger is expected to lead the attack against Sunderland, with Welbeck likely to begin the match on the bench.
